Structure Fire

Olympia Firefighters responded to a structure fire in the 1100 block of Boulevard Rd. SE at 8:28 pm, Wednesday evening, December 6, 2017.  The first engine arrived 4 minutes later and found a small, 1 story house with a fire in the attic. The homeowner had seen bubbling paint on a wall above the fireplace and then saw smoke coming out of the attic vents.  There was a fire in the fireplace at the time.  The resident called 9-1-1 and evacuated the home.

The fire appeared to have come from the chimney above the fireplace and had spread into the attic.  The attic fire and associated wall fire above the fireplace were extinguished.  The fire did not spread to the rest of the house but there was smoke damage throughout.  The fire was declared under control at 8:53 pm. Fire units continued to perform salvage, overhaul and tend to the homeowner’s needs for the next few hours.

Olympia Fire Department responded with 4 engines, 1 ladder truck, 2 medic units, one aid unit and a command unit.  There was one injury to a firefighter, a twisted ankle.  The resident was uninjured.  The resident and firefighters are looking for 3 cats. Damage to structure and contents is estimated at $30,000 to $40,000.

The cause of the fire appears to have been an issue in the chimney that allowed fire to escape into the wall and attic.
