May 21 Officer Involved Shooting Update

Status of May 21st Officer Involved Shooting Investigation

This week Olympia Police Chief Roberts met with Thurston County Sheriff John Snaza and Thurston County Prosecutor Jon Tunheim to receive an update on the status of the officer involved shooting investigation that occurred on May 21st, 2015.   No specific details or results of the investigation were discussed and Sheriff Snaza reported that the investigation is still on-going.

The Sheriff and Prosecutor projected that the investigation and Prosecutor review may be completed by early August.  When complete, the Prosecutor will share his findings with the public and the Olympia Police Department.  After receiving the investigative report, the Olympia Police Department will begin an internal review of the incident to determine whether department policies and procedures were followed.    Sheriff Snaza and Prosecutor Tunheim clarified with Chief Roberts that neither Chief Roberts nor the Olympia Police Department would receive an advance copy of the investigations or findings.

Olympia Police Chief Ronnie Roberts commented, “I would like to thank the Olympia community for their continued patience in this important process.  The Department is awaiting the results of this investigation with our community.”  Chief Roberts went on to say that the time involved underscores the integrity, thoroughness and objectivity of this process.
