In-Custody Death Investigation

Man Assaulted an Employee of InterCity Transit

At about 2:30pm on Monday afternoon, employees of Intercity Transit called 911 to report that a man had entered their locked administrative facilities and was acting violently.  Intercity Transit employees contained the subject, but he broke away from them and assaulted one of the staff members.  When police arrived, the man calmed down and officers were able to escort him outside.  Once outside, the man again became combative, kicking at and spitting on officers.  He was handcuffed and detained when a sergeant on scene noticed the man appeared ill.  Medics, who were on scene attending to the injured employee, attempted to treat the man but despite life-saving efforts, the man died.

At this time, the man has not been identified.  He is a white male who appears to be in his 30s-40s.

The incident is being investigated by a regional law enforcement team, the Thurston County Critical Incident Team (CIT).  The CIT investigates all serious cases involving injury or death where an officer is involved.  The investigation has just begun.  More information about this matter will be released shortly.
