Historic Preservation Volunteers

Why is preservation important?

Just imagine Olympia without the old courthouse or without the Capitol Theatre! Our buildings are a record of our people. They are a part of what makes one community different from another. The histories of those who came before are preserved for future generations thanks to professionals and volunteers who conduct oral histories, research, and preserve photographs, documents and artifacts.

Why else is preservation important?

Consider that the most environmentally sustainable building is the one that's already built. There are many reasons why preservation is critical for maintaining the spirit of our community and the protection of our environment.

The Olympia Heritage Commission advises the City Council on matters of preservation. If you'd like to get involved but aren't interested in appointment to the Commission, consider helping our partners at the Olympia Historical Society.
