In 2004, Olympia voters passed a funding measure to increase the private utility tax 2% for the purchase of land, development and maintenance of parks. A goal of the funding measure was to purchase approximately 500 acres of land by 2024. As of September 2017, the City has acquired 339 acres toward this goal, bringing Olympia's total park inventory to 1,242 acres.
The 2016 Parks, Arts and Recreation Plan Capital Investment Strategy plans for a new athletic field community park site and 10 new neighborhood park sites to be purchased in the next 10 years.
