2019 will focus on development of a Regional Climate Mitigation Plan. In 2018, Olympia, along with Thurston County, Tumwater, and Lacey, partnered with Thurston Regional Planning Council to scope the Plan. The plan will focus on strategies and actions that can be taken collectively and individually that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the region.
2019 will focus on completing the Plan. This Plan will be a companion to the already completed Thurston Climate Adaptation Plan (https://www.trpc.org/580/Thurston-Climate-Adaptation-Plan), which focuses on how the region can reduce risks, respond to impacts from climate change and remain resilient. The new regional plan will focus on the much larger, community-wide emissions, not only the emissions from municipal operations.
The City's emissions represent 2% of our community emissions, and the City continues to take significant steps to reduce emissions (GHGs) from operations. Actions taken in recent years include:
- Converting all streetlights and traffic signals to LED
- Energy and water conservation retrofits in City buildings
- Solar panels on City Hall, Farmer's Market and Library
- Adding 6 electric vehicles to the City fleet
- Purchase of green power
- Use of biodiesel in City trucks
