NTMP - Traffic Calming Devices

The City of Olympia currently offers four types of traffic-calming devices for neighborhoods to consider. These four devices have been approved by the Olympia Fire Department and are eligible for use on City streets.

Devices Available:

The City has four type of approved traffic-calming devices. They include the 14-Foot Speed Cushion, the One-Lane Narrow Point, the Two-Lane Narrow Point and Bulb-Outs. Learn more about each of these online.

Landscaping Around Devices:

Landscaping is optional on three of the four devices: The Two-lane Narrow Point, One-lane Narrow Point and curb Bulb-outs can accommodate landscaping. Staff will work with project street residents to determine if plants or concrete will be installed.

  • What Type of Plants Are Used? When plants are installed, Transportation staff works with our Parks and Recreation Department and Urban Forester to select and install drought tolerant plants and trees. Plant size, type, height, and placement are site specific.
  • The City funds and installs the initial landscaping used in the traffic-calming devices. Once landscaping is installed, project street residents and/or Neighborhood Association are responsible for maintenance.
