Security for the Community
Do you have a security camera on your home or business? Did you know that footage from your camera could be helpful in solving crimes in your area?
Increasing quality standards have made video images an effective tool in criminal investigations and asking businesses and residents near crime scenes about video surveillance has become standard practice for most law enforcement agencies.
To make this process easier, the Olympia Police Department is partnering with the community through a voluntary camera registry. Participants simply provide their contact information and the location of security cameras on their property. When a crime occurs, officers can check the registry to see if there are cameras in the area and easily contact the owners to ask if they are willing to review or provide relevant footage. This greatly reduces investigative time and increases efficiency.
This is a voluntary program. Registering a camera does not give officers direct access to privately-owned cameras.
