Shoreline Master Program (SMP)

Comprehensive Plan and Shoreline Master Program Updates

The Planning Commission is currently working with City staff to review and update the Comprehensive Plan and Shoreline Master Program. Find out more about the process on our Imagine Olympia site and visit the What's Happening page to find upcoming meetings and events.

Seven jurisdictions in Thurston County, including Olympia, have shorelines that require local and state management under the Shoreline Management Act (SMA). They are: Thurston County and the cities of Bucoda, Lacey, Olympia, Tenino, Tumwater, and Yelm.

Individually, the jurisdictions have adopted a single regulatory and policy document which is called a Shoreline Master Program (SMP). The existing Shoreline Master Program for the Thurston Region was adopted in 1976 and was comprehensively updated in 1984 and 1990.

Thurston Regional Planning Council (TRPC) maintains the regional shoreline master program for these jurisdictions. The Shoreline Master Program document is located on the TRPC website.

Shoreline Master Program Update

Olympia is the process of updating the local Shoreline Master Program (SMP). Initial work was coordinated by Thurston Regional Planning Council in 2007.

Currently, the Olympia Planning Commission and City of Olympia long-range planning staff are developing SMP update recommendations to present to the City Council later in 2010.
