Pump Track - Coming in September!

A new pump track is being constructed next to the skate court.  A pump track is a small 3-foot wide looping trail than can be ridden continuously on many types of bicycles without pedaling. This project also includes the enhancement of the pedestrian/emergency access trail from Alta St. park entrance to Cooper Point Road.

Partnership. Members of the South Sound Bike Park Alliance (SSBPA) have donated time and materials to the project, both during construction and for long-term track maintenance.  For more information on SSBPA and how to get involved, go to ssbpa.org.

Project Cost and Grant Assistance. Total project budget is $38,000.  The City received a $5,000 grant from REI and a $448.82 donation from Macy’s to help fund this project.  Grant requests to the Nisqually Indian Tribe Charitable Fund and Friends of Capitol Forest for additional project components will be submitted by the Parks, Arts, Recreation and Cultural (PARC) Foundation and SSBPA in late September.

Park History:Yauger #2 at sunset

Developed in 1982, this park was the vision of retired United States Army Colonel Yauger. Its 40 acres offer a wide range of recreation experiences:  four multi-use sports fields with concession stand, jogging path, skate court, playground, horseshoe pits, community gardens and educational facility, and opportunities for viewing nature.

The most unusual feature of the park is the created wetland, which serves as a stormwater retention pond during heavy rains that would otherwise flood nearby streets.  When it’s not filled to capacity, the area provides aquatic and upland habitat, inviting a variety of waterfowl into one of Olympia’s most urban environments.

The Yauger Park shelter is open for reservations!  Right next to the playground with the coolest mega-slide in Olympia, the shelter is a great place to host a potluck or barbecue, and enjoy all the amenities the park has to offer.  Reservations are available at 360.753.8380.
This modern community park contains 40 acres of recreation diversity. For the active enthusiast, the park has four ballfields (three lighted), that in fall and winter convert to three soccer fields. On April 1, 2000 the Olympia Skate Court was opened. This 11,500 square foot concrete skating surface is a draw to local skaters who, along with community and City support, made the project possible.

Did you know?

  • Yauger Park captures stormwater runoff from the west side business district in order to keep our streets from flooding.
  • The pond, by design, removes contaminants from the stormwater.
  • When full, the pond can hold up to 27 million gallons of water!
  • After the storms subside, the stored water is gradually released through Percival Creek and ultimately into Budd Inlet.
