Arts Commission 20th Anniversary

Current and former members of the Olympia Arts Commission gathered on October 3, 2008 to celebrate the Commission's 20th Anniversary and kick off our 37th Arts Walk in downtown Olympia.

As part of the celebration, the Commission honored and recognized arts organizations that met or exceeded 20 years of contributions and support to the arts in our city. The Comission acknoweledged that the work of supporting the arts in our community cannot be credited to one organization alone. The remarks of the evening were framed around a set of five expectations from a 1989 Needs Assessment. These five expectations were a wish, or a prediction of sorts, about what an Arts Commission could bring to this community within 20 years:

  • Arts Commission Members with ProclamationOlympia will have an art atmosphere which will create an improved image of the city.
  • The public will be more art fluent and support of the arts.
  • Olympia will have a visible and loved public art collection.
  • There will be a linkage between the arts and successful business community.
  • Olympia will be a place where artists and arts organizations can succeed and flourish.

The following organizations were honored that evening: Ballet Arts Olympia, Ballet Northwest, Capital Area Youth Symphonies, Captial Playghouse/Kids at Play, Creative Theater Experience, The Evergreen State College, Hands On Children's Museum, Harlequin Productions, KAOS Community Radio, Mariah Art School, Masterworks Choral Ensemble, Olympia Art League, Olympia Camera Club, Olympia Chamber Orchestra, Olympia Film Society, Olympia Junior League, Olympia Little Theater, Olympia Symphony Orchestra, POSSCA, South Puget Sound Community College, State Capital Museum and Washington Center for the Performing Arts.
