What is Safe Olympia?

Safe Olympia focuses on safe reporting for crimes and discrimination related to the City's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ) residents and visitors.

Safe Olympia is designed to further enhance the relationship between the Olympia Police Department, the LGBTQ community, and local businesses. Safe Olympia signage is displayed by community members, businesses, schools and organizations that work closely with the Olympia Police Department in an effort to reduce anti-LGBTQ crimes, reduce LGBTQ student bullying, and encourage the reporting of LGBTQ crimes.

These locations (see map below) are safe and secure places for victims of anti-LGBTQ related crimes and harassment.

Safe Olympia Locations

Become a Safe Olympia Location

Businesses, schools and organizations can request to become a Safe Olympia location using the form below. You will receive a welcome packet and Safe Olympia decals (4" x 6") and/or posters in the mail in 1-2 weeks.

Displaying the Safe Olympia symbol at your premise carries some important responsibilities that will assist in protecting LGBTQ victims of crime. Participating locations will be expected to:

  • Post the Safe Olympia decal outside the front entrance of your establishment (approx. 3-5 feet high, if possible).
  • Allow LGBTQ victims to enter and remain at your premise until Olympia Police arrive
  • Call, or assist these victims in calling 911
  • Instruct all staff at your location of these protocols

Reporting LGBTQ Crimes

If you are the victim of, or witness to an anti-LGBTQ crime, please report the incident to the police immediately by calling 9-1-1. This will allow OPD to respond to, and track these incidents.

LGBTQ Community Liaison

The Olympia Police Department LGBTQ Community Liaison provides outreach to the LGBTQ citizens of Olympia. The position promotes public safety projects and programs aimed at establishing a closer, more effective dialogue between the police and the LGBTQ community.
