About the Project
In 2015, the City demolished the former County Health and Thurston County Housing Authority building structures, but the foundations still remain. This interim improvement project will remove the foundations and restore the area in a way that allows for public access and enjoyment until a master plan for these City-owned properties is developed.
This is a City of Olympia Parks project. These proposed improvements are not associated with the private development located to the east at 410 & 411 4th Avenue West.
The Olympia City Council set five parameters for this project:
1. Focus on the foundation areas of the two former buildings on the Isthmus.
2. Be an interim use until a master plan is developed.
3. Try to allow for reuse of as many of the improvements as possible.
4. Public will have an opportunity to provide input.
5. Project budget is $500,000.
Interim Park Design Selection
In early 2017, the Olympia Parks Department solicited feedback from the community during a public meeting and accepted comments via email on four different design concepts developed by Parks Planning & Design staff. Based on feedback from the public and a recommendation by the Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee, Council approved a design concept on May 16, 2017 that incorporates a hardscape approach for the large, rectangular site and a grassy design for the smaller, square site.
