Julie Hankins, City Councilmember

Julie Hankins

Julie Hankins was appointed to an open term in January 2012 through November 2013. She was then elected to a four year term for Position #5 that will conclude on December 31, 2017.

Julie Hankins has been part of the Olympia community for 25 years. She and her husband David have raised their two sons here. Throughout the years she has been a volunteer in the local schools and various community organizations. In the 1990’s, she became involved in neighborhoods when she formed her neighborhood association, Indian Creek. While president of the association Julie was privileged to work with other neighborhood leaders and together they formed the Coalition of Neighborhood Associations (CNA). A coalition or partnership of the recognized neighborhoods throughout Olympia, she served as the Coalition’s first secretary, before becoming vice chair and eventually the chair of the organization.

In 2012, Julie sought appointment to fill a vacancy on the Olympia City Council and was selected. In November 2013, she was elected to her first full term on the council on a platform that included neighborhood planning and improving public involvement. She is a graduate of Seattle University and is currently employed at NOVA Middle School.

Julie’s years of neighborhood leadership have taught her two very invaluable lessons. The first is; being a neighbor is the one thing we all have in common. And the second, all decisions made at a city level, whether at an executive level or by an employee on the front lines are ultimately going to impact each and every one of us, and where we live.

Her vision for Olympia is of a community where all the members, all the neighbors, come together and work together to turn their shared vision of a clean, safe, thriving, and welcoming city into reality. It is a vision that encompasses and celebrates every unique and special neighborhood in Olympia including the downtown core.
