2010 Budget
Olympia's Budget
Unlike the federal government, cities are required to adopt balanced budgets with projected expenses being equal to or less than projected revenues. For 2010, Olympia expects to have about $4 million less in General Fund revenue than the 2009 budget. The City's General Fund includes the basic municipal services (excluding utilities). To balance, we are looking at a combination of cost savings and service cuts.
State law requires the City Manager to present the City Council with a preliminary balanced budget recommendation. The City Council then reviews the City Manager's recommendation and decides what changes are necessary.
City Manager Steve Hall presented his recommended budget to the City Council on Monday, November 2. The City Council held a public hearing on the preliminary budget at its regular meeting on Tuesday, November 10. At public meetings on November 17 and 24, the City Council will discuss the preliminary budget, their priorities, public comments and testimony, and identify budget changes. The City Council is expected to approve the City's 2010 Operating and Capital budgets at its meeting Tuesday, December 8.
All of the meetings are open to the public. They will be televised live on TCTV Olympia Cable Channel 3 and available for online viewing through the City's website.
